Fraud prevention

If you run a brick-and-mortar shop, before concluding a payment card transaction, remember to make sure that:

  • The card is not damaged (cut, broken)
  • The card does not show signs of forgery or conversion (incorrect hologram, irregular size, a detached or faded magnetic stripe, decoloured or delaminated edges)
  • The four-digit number printed on the front of the card is identical with the first four digits of the actual number of the card
  • The Customer’s surname displayed on the terminal corresponds to the surname on the payment card (some types of cards may not feature the customer’s surname)
  • The signature on the terminal print-out is consistent with the one on the card (if the transaction is to be confirmed with the signature)

This system is a transaction security standard that works by identifying the card holder with the use of an additional, most frequently one-time password, either generated by TOKEN or received via a text message. To avoid other people obtaining the password, it is not used with transactions that require the physical presence of the card; therefore, it is never identical with the PIN code.
